The International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP) is a virtual library of public domain scores and parts that is constantly being updated with existing works and new submissions. Along with these scores IMSLP also allows users to uploads recordings, submit their own compositions, and discuss music on their forums.
Why is this Important?
There are innumerable reasons that make IMSLP a helpful resource. Let's say you're forming a chamber group and want to start a list of repertoire. Instead of having to buy a ton of parts to test pieces out you can print works off of IMSLP and once you find your favorites you can purchase them for real. As you should really should be supporting publishing companies by purchasing their music when you plan to perform them, and especially if you're planning to make money while performing them.
Another great way this site can be used is for people interested in composition and arranging. You can endlessly score study the greatest composers -such as Mahler, Wagner, Ives, and tons more. Arrangers can also use this to analyze works to see what can and can't work for certain instrumentations much quicker.
Yes, this website is completely legit (if it wasn't then I probably wouldn't be promoting it). It follows the copyright laws of Canada, which is that all the works need to be either public domain or have the permission of the copyright owner. For a work to become public domain it has to have been 50 years since it was published and the final author of it also needs to have died 50 years ago. This means that since Shostakovich past away in 1975, his works won't be available until 2026 (I'm counting down the days).
