Tip: Making the Most Out of Your Warm-Ups

You've got your big audition coming up and you're still having problems with Till and Heldenleben. How can you fit more time into practicing orchestral excerpts and solos, even though you already have a jam-packed schedule?
  Add them to your warm-up!

This is a great way to be efficient with your time, and it gives great results. In my warm-up I said that I'm always adding new exercises into it, because if something is in my warm-up, then it stops seeming as hard. The same works for excerpts too.
Let's say you only have about an hour to play, and you haven't even starting playing yet. After you get done with your prewarm-up, and your face is feeling good, instead of doing regular lip slurs, change the series to match Heldenleben's opening theme, or the descending line at the end of the Till solo. Furthermore, if you have a solo like Gliere's 3rd movement, instead of just doing articulation on scales, use the 16th notes on the last page.
Making your warm-up more versatile will give you more time to break down excepts and make you feel more comfortable with them. In addition. changing how you warm-up once a while is good for the facial muscles as well.
